For all intents and purposes, George Mason was probably written to be a throw-away character. He arrived on 24 in the very first eisode with some of the most memorable scenes of the whole season. He was, at the time, a little less than honest, Jack having reveiled Mason had pocket a heavey sum of money in a way CTU might not have approved 2 years prior.

His arrogance towards Jack Bauer made him an instant contender among fans of the show to be the much-rumoured mole inside CTU. As it transpired, he wasn't. And on second reviewing of his character throughout Season One, his arrogance and quick wit ironically endeared him to the shows fans.

By Season Two, any Mason fence-sitters had vanished, leaving nothing but Mason adoration. Now in Jack's position (no doubt with a little 'nudge nudge wink wink' thank you in President Palmer's direction), Mason was a confirmed good guy.

The bad news is writers of 24 love to pain us mere mortals. Mason tragically encountered a high level of radioactivity during his early morning outing from CTU. His physical disent was heartbreaking. After giving everything he possibly could to CTU, his condition forced him to take leave.

But not one to go with a whimper, Mason went out in Heroic form. He piloted the plane that was to destroy the bomb set to go off that day in L.A. The sacrifice of his own life saved millions of lives.

And left us all devastated.
